Pink Double Columbine Seed Packet (20 seeds)
Axe & Root Homestead is finally sharing seeds from our own growing spaces (with free shipping)! I've been seed-saving for years and using my own stock in my gardens. In 2024, I grew more crops than ever and excess seeds were saved to share with other growers. These seeds were grown in my permaculture gardens, totally naturally, with zero additives, pesticides, or herbicides. Small batches are hand-harvested, dried and packaged here in central New Jersey.
About Columbine
This is a double-columbine species which means it contains more petals than typical columbine varieties. The blossom head more closely resembles a mini dahlia than a columbine blossom with corolla.
Typical Germination: 21-28 days
Light: Part-sun
Days to Maturity: May not bloom the first season if planted in spring. Will bloom second season.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soils.
Sowing Depth: 1/8"
Height: 24-36"
Climate Notes: These seeds require a period of cold to germinate. Stratify for at least 60 days before sowing. Sow 8-10 weeks before last frost. Transplant out after danger of frost has passed.
Permaculture Uses
- Columbine is a perennial plant which returns with more blooms every season.
- Perennials are composed of woodier and more dense plant tissues which absorb more carbon into their plant material and into the surrounding soil.
- Their permanent root systems assist in healthy soil structure and contribute to the larger mycorrhizea network.
- Blossoms attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees.
- Seed pods provide food for birds and wildlife if left in place.
- Flowers and leaves are said to be edible. Further research is advised.
- Some folks use columbine medicinally. Research is suggested for more information.
- Columbine is an accumulator meaning it pulls nutrients upwards from deeper soil layers, making nutrients more readily available to nearby plants.
- Flowers can be used in vases and in mixed bouquets.
- Despite being a perennial, these plants self-seed if pods are left on the stalks.
- Note: While blossoms do draw in pollinators to growing spaces, some growers find columbine to be allelopathic, negatively affecting the growth and performance of nearby vegetable crops.
Be sure to understand your own growing zone and microclimate before planting seeds. Research is advised on plant varieties, requirements, and specifications. After seeds arrive, refer back to this product listing for suggested sowing instructions. Instructions will not be shipped with seeds in an effort to save paper.
IMPORTANT:
Refunds will not be provided for ungerminated seeds. These seeds are used in my own personal garden and have been found to be viable. Please research seed sowing processes before purchasing as faulty sowing, user error, extreme weather conditions, or other factors resulting in poor germination rates are outside of our control. No exceptions.
