Tansy (Tanacetum Vulgare) Seed Packet (50 seeds)
Axe & Root Homestead is finally sharing seeds from our own growing spaces (with free shipping)! I've been seed-saving for years and using my own stock in my gardens. In 2024, I grew more crops than ever and excess seeds were saved to share with other growers. These seeds were grown in my permaculture gardens, totally naturally, with zero additives, pesticides, or herbicides. Small batches are hand-harvested, dried and packaged here in central New Jersey.
About Tansy
Many folks shy away from Tansy as it is considered a noxious weed in several states. DO YOUR RESEARCH and avoid planting in areas where tansy may be considered invasive. Here in New Jersey, this strain grows as an upright ornamental shrub which returns annually. We haven't had it spread at all in four years of growing and adore the yellow blossoms it produces.
Note that tansy can be toxic to humans and pets, especially if ingested and in large quantities. Caution is urged when handling as some folks find the plant to cause a rash. Handle with gloves if needed. We urge additional research and medical advice before consuming.
Typical Germination: 21-28 days
Light: Full sun
Soil: Grows well in many different soils
Sowing Depth: 1/8"
Height: 2-5 feet tall, depending on soil nutrients
Climate Notes: Cold-sensitive, sow out after danger of frost has passed
Permaculture Uses
- Tansy contains oils that repel flies, ants and fleas
- While some folks use this plant medically and for eating, extreme caution and research is required
- An excellent companion for blueberries
- Suppresses weeds and acts as a great border plant
- Pollinators are heavily attracted to the blossoms
- As a perennial, the root structure of tansy is extensive and helps to prevent erosion
- Woody plant tissues absorb carbon dioxide from the environment, store it within, and also sink carbon into the surrounding soil
- Tansy is considered an accumulator, pulling minerals (specifically potassium) and nutrients upward from the soil sub layers, helping neighboring plants to have access. Excellent in fruit tree and shrub guilds.
- Tansy is a great chop-and-drop addition to compost heaps due to its high mineral content
- Attracts native birds and small wildlife
- A green dye can be made from young shoots
- Tansy is an excellent ingredient for homemade insecticidal spray
Be sure to understand your own growing zone and microclimate before planting seeds. Research is advised on plant varieties, requirements, and specifications. After seeds arrive, refer back to this product listing for suggested sowing instructions. Instructions will not be shipped with seeds in an effort to save paper.
IMPORTANT:
Refunds will not be provided for ungerminated seeds. These seeds are used in my own personal garden and have been found to be viable. Please research seed sowing processes before purchasing as faulty sowing, user error, extreme weather conditions, or other factors resulting in poor germination rates are outside of our control. No exceptions.
