The thing about permaculture growing is that plants are specifically selected to enhance a particular site, or to perform a particular function. While permaculture plant solutions are as unique as the farms and gardens they are grown in, there are a few common superstar species that do well in a wide range of climates throughout the US.
Elderberry
Product Size: 3 cuttings
Growing Zones: 3-9
Years to Bear Fruit: Typically 2
Mature Size: 6-10' tall x 6-8' wide
Light Requirements: Full sun or part shade
Soil Requirements: Moist and loamy soil, but well draining
Pollination Requirements: Cross pollination will yield higher amounts of fruit. We recommend Pocahontas or Ranch varieties.
Growth Habit: Elderberries are incredibly tolerant plants that spread by way of underground tubers/root systems. Be sure to plant in its forever home, as eradication can be difficult. Upright stalks boast leafy fronds with large flowering bunches in late spring. If pollinated and protected from birds, blossoms will turn into berry clusters.
Permaculture Contributions:
- A hardy perennial that comes back year after year with larger harvests
- Medicinal berries (to be prepared correctly as toxic if consumed raw)
- Forage for wild birds
- Provides shelter for beneficial insects overwinter
- Can create thick, dense hedgerows for privacy and for a windbreak
Our farm does not use any pesticides or herbicides of any kind on our items nor in our growing spaces.
Note: It is recommended to always consult with your local county extension office before purchasing and installing any plants to ensure they are not considered invasive species in your geographical location.
