The thing about permaculture growing is that plants are specifically selected to enhance a particular site, or to perform a particular function. While permaculture plant solutions are as unique as the farms and gardens they are grown in, there are a few common superstar species that do well in a wide range of climates throughout the US.
Sunchokes (aka "Wild Sunflowers", Jerusalem Artichokes)
Product Size: Three (3) Rhizomes
Growing Zones: 3-9
Mature Size: 6-10' tall x 3-5' wide
Light Requirements: Full sun or part shade
Soil Requirements: Moist and well draining soil (can grow well in clay soils)
Pollination Requirements: This is a self-fertile plant that spreads heavily by way of underground tubers
Growth Habit: Very tall, upright thick green stalks with small yellow sunflower-like blossoms at the top. Will spread quickly so be sure to plant in a permanently desired location.
Permaculture Contributions:
- Tall stalks may be cut and dried for trellis making
- Due to their slightly allopathic nature, do not interplant with other vegetable crops (with the exception of rhubarb, peanuts, and corn--these are great companions!)
- Edible tubers
- Perennials that establish easily and reproduce readily
- Blossoms are excellent food source for pollinators
- The thick growth-habit of sunchokes makes a great privacy barrier or windbreak
- Fodder for some barnyard animals (be sure to research before feeding)
Our farm does not use any pesticides or herbicides of any kind on our items nor in our growing spaces.
Note: It is recommended to always consult with your local county extension office before purchasing and installing any plants to ensure they are not considered invasive species in your geographical location.
