The thing about permaculture growing is that plants are specifically selected to enhance a particular site, or to perform a particular function. While permaculture plant solutions are as unique as the farms and gardens they are grown in, there are a few common superstar species that do well in a wide range of climates throughout the US.
Comfrey (Russian)
Product Size: Two (2) Root Cuttings
Growing Zones: 3-9
Mature Size: 4-6' tall x 2-3' wide
Light Requirements: Full sun or part shade
Soil Requirements: Prefers fertile, well-draining soil (though can grow in a variety of conditions)
Pollination Requirements: This plant does not reseed, though can spread through roots if desired by digging and replanting
Growth Habit: Upright ornamental-like leafy shrub that will begin to fall if it is too tall and heavy. At this point, simply cut and use as mulch. The plant will grow back quickly, and as many as six times in one summer (we use ours as chop and drop plants constantly)
Permaculture Contributions:
- Excellent mulching crop. Simply chop and lay over soils or use in compost systems.
- Great for "comfrey tea" liquid fertilizer
- Long tap root pulls nutrients from deep within the soil to make it more readily available for nearby plants
- Nectar source for pollinators
- Comfrey is a favorite among predatory and beneficial insects
- Medicinal
- Roots can be dug and broken to produce many new plants
- Adds biomass to soil
Our farm does not use any pesticides or herbicides of any kind on our items nor in our growing spaces.
Note: It is recommended to always consult with your local county extension office before purchasing and installing any plants to ensure they are not considered invasive species in your geographical location.
